Live report: 1st March 2011, CLOUD CONTROL(AUS) at Maroquinerie, Paris

I missed the opening act who was the solo French female singer Anything Maria (sorry).
The band to see that Tuesday night was the Australian band Cloud Control for their first Paris concert, as they toured Europe for the first time! I discovered the band many months ago thanks to one of the gigs organised by Black Cab Sessions in July 2010 with King Charles as support act. I mentioned them briefly here, if you missed it.

It looks like to be a great year for Cloud Control. After getting positive feedbacks last year from their UK tour, they were on their headline Europe tour in Germany, in Switzerland, in the Netherlands, in France, in Belgium and in the UK. Their debut album "Bliss Release" which will be release at Pias in France in May is one of my favorite albums from last year. As you might probably know, this four-piece band from Blue Mountains, signed on Ivy Leagues Records and Infectious Music, just won the sixth annual Australian Music Prize yesterday for their album against artists like Pikelet, Dan Kelly, Richard In Your Mind, Tame Impala, Sally Seltmann, Gareth Liddiard, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and The Holidays to take out the $30,000 award

It was a long time I haven't been in this venue. The last time was the gig with Scott Matthews, Siskiyou and Rubik in November. Last week I saw an excellent band from New Zealand called The Phoenix Foundation. That Tuesday I stayed in the Oceania area where there are many interesting bands and went at the gig headlined by the Australian indie-band Cloud Control. They've already supported bands like Local Natives, Vampire Weekend, The Temper Trap, Supergrass, Josh Pyke et Yves Klein Blue. Their performance at la Maroquinerie was absolutely awesome! I was very surprised and happy that the venue was pretty crowded that night. I'm curious to know how French people heard about Cloud Control... Their songs were catchy as hell in live and were played with some genius arrangements. For example, the rap part after the chorus into the song 'Gold Canary', the long opening with the four members singing alternately then in chorus at the beginning of 'Death Cloud'. They even covered Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" without really rapping... but performed the song with their own arrangements, which I found quite epic. (You can listen to their radio performance of this cover from last year on Youtube.) I think it's the first band I saw who covered a rapper's song... 'There's Nothing In The Water That We Can't Fight' is going to be their next single that you'll often hear on the radio soon. It was so good that they played the catchy 'Buffalo Country'. Unforgettable choruses. Very good energy on stage from all the members, jumping, dancing, clapping hands. Very good audience as well. Perfect. They have to come back and I hope they will play their debut single "Vintage Book" next time! ;-)

If you're lucky enough to go to the SXSW Festival this month, be sure to catch them! If not, they're playing a few gigs in the UK and in Australia.
And check out their excellent album "Bliss Release" or their EP "Meditation Song"(on Spotify) and their great videos.
