The previous video might make you think of what kind of band it is and why the young man featured in the video seems to only sing the English parts. Is he from the band ?
The Black Skirts actually consists of the Korean one-man band Bryan Cho (also know as 조휴일/Cho Hyu-il, or Holiday Cho) who is the singer, songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist and bassist, if he's not performing with a band on stage. For me, he is one of the main artists to know (and support) if you're interested in the Korean independant music scene. He is appreciated for his straightforward lyrics by his fans.
Born in 1982, he grew up in Seoul, then in the United States and decided to pursue a career in music in 2004 in a punk band, then in 2008 in Korea with his project The Black Skirts. He sings mostly in Korean and in English, and also in Spanish.
A couple of weeks ago, I surprisingly found one of his songs mentioned in the book I was reading. It was "Antifreeze" in the novel "Ma vie palpitante" (2014) / "두근두근 내인생" (2011) by Korean novelist Kim Ae-ran / 김애란. From what I know about Korean literature, modern Korean novelists tend to mention artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan or popular Korean singers in the 1980-90s like Cho Yong-pil, Lee Mun-sae or Seo Tai-ji, but rarely Korean indie bands, if not at all, so it made me smile :).
