Live report: 26th November 2010, IDIOT GLEE(US) + JOHNNY FLYNN(UK) + TWIN SISTER(US) + THE NEW WINE(NOR) at Flèche d'Or, Paris

Very short review of this show.

Schedule:

- Idiot Glee
- Johnny Flynn
- Twin Sister
- The New Wine

Flèche d'Or, Paris

Idiot Glee(US)

8:35pm - 9:00pm
Idiot Glee is the solo project of 23-year-old James Friley from Lexington, Kentucky. This one-man band, working now with Moshi Moshi Records, creates with several keyboards and loop pedals along his reverbed voice as back vocals a "post-doo-wop" sound and this can remind you Motown and 1950s music. He makes me think of a Motown version of Young Man without electric guitar. It was his first Paris gig and he didn't expect to see so many people in the crowd. :) It was interesting to see how he played with all his sophisticated material. He probably played the same songs in Paris as at Le Guest Who? (session at Utrecht Festival, 3VOOR12, 27 Nov 2010) (review). His live performance was actually quite different to his EP version, his songs are really good and I was really glad he played his excellent cover of 'Ain't No Sunshine' by Bill Withers.
Check out his very good 7" EP released on Hop Hop Records whose art cover shows a nice picture of him and his brother when they were children.

I had a short talk with him, very nice young man. Sad that I didn't have enough time to talk more to him.
He'll probably come back in spring in Europe, stay tuned!

He played with the bands Women, Small Black and will play with Menomena at the Deaf Institute, Manchester on 1st December, and also with Summer Camp at Moshi Moshi Christmas Show at The Drop, London on 3rd December 2010.

By the way, I particularly love the excerpts of the "Improvisations for R Clint Colburn" (solo piano) you could listen to on his MySpace.

To know more about him:

Johnny Flynn(UK)

9:10pm - 9:55pm
If you've ever heard of Mumford & Sons or Laura Marling, you know the folk singer Johnny Flynn, for sure. This young man with short blond hair and a nice smiling face makes all the girls (and boys) in the first three rows melt and make everybody laugh and smile. He could be compared to the Swedish artist The Tallest Man on Earth. He played alone on stage with his resonator guitar. Awesome solo acoustic performance! Perfect! Nothing else to say. (They were many guys who looked like him in the audience, it was quite confusing.)

Johnny Flynn - Sweet Williams (live)

Just a simple idea I got during his performance: take separate pictures of the artist and the stage, then put them together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

Twin Sister(US)

10:05pm - 10:50pm
I've already heard of these young people from New York because 1/ they were added to the lineup of this show and 2/ they toured with The Morning Benders in their fall tour and Chris Chu from The Morning Benders mentioned them on his Twitter profile.
Very nice performance, I quite liked it. The only thing I didn't like is the way the lead singer sings, I actually didn't understand what she was singing, it's like if she was whispering. Their songs are atmospheric and experimental with 1980s pop tunes.

The New Wine(NOR)

11:00pm - 11:50pm
I originally came to see them. Catchy electro songs that make you dance by this four-piece band from Norway. As you probably know, they sound like their friends The Whitest Boy Alive and you might think of Daft Punk and Nintendo games themes when listening to them. You probably noticed that the lead singer wasn't in the middle of the stage and wasn't floodlit.

Not enough time to talk to them as it was very late, very nice guys!

After the show, the song 'Finn Bikkjen!' by Casiokids was playing in the venue, great choice. :)
