SAKANACTION / サカナクション (JAP)
From Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan
From Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan
"Sakanaction is a Japanese rock band from Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. Their music is a fusion of alternative rock, electronic, pop, and New Wave styles, and is thus difficult to classify under one category. The band consists of five members: Ichirō Yamaguchi, Motoharu Iwadera, Ami Kusakari, Emi Okazaki, and Keiichi Ejima.
The name Sakanaction is a portmanteau of "sakana" (魚, "fish") and "action". In the band's own words, their name reflects a wish to act quickly and lightly, like fishes in the water, without fearing changes in the music scene." Biography on Wikipedia

SUNG SI KYUNG / 성시경 (KOR)
From South Korea
Biography on Wikipedia
Biography on Wikipedia
I don't really listen to the K-Pop music of nowadays, but I'm discovering legends of Korean music who were pretty good, even if I don't understand the Korean lyrics.
The singer Sung Si Kyung is a famous Korean ballad singer under the label Jellyfish Entertainment who started his singer career in 2000. On his profile, you can find all the info about the albums he released and music videos. His ballad songs and his smooth are well loved by the Koreans.
I like better his songs in live performances than those in the album version. His ballad songs are all different, but they are all good. I think these songs are his most popular songs :
Sung Si Kyung - 거리에서 / On The Street (live)
Sung Si Kyung - 처음처럼 / Like The First Time (live)
Sung Si Kyung - 거리에서 / On The Street (live)
Sung Si Kyung - 처음처럼 / Like The First Time (live)
He has too many good songs, so here's a selection of songs :
Sung Si-kyung - 성시경 - 안녕 나의 사랑 / Goodbye My Love
You might notice his romantic and smart guy image, but I know that he didn't hesitate to break this image on TV shows or on stage and doesn't really care about that.Sung Si-kyung - 성시경 - 안녕 나의 사랑 / Goodbye My Love
This fan Youtube channel and this one are worth to check out for live performances of this singer. The easiest way to find more music videos and live performances is to search "성시경" or "Sung Si Kyung" on Youtube. This fan website is perfect for searching lyrics of his songs in Korean, Romanization and English.

"Special Others is a Japanese band that blends improvised jazz with post-rock influences. Their lyrics, on non-instrumental songs, mix English and Japanese worlds, oftentimes extraordinarily exemplify: difficult to decipher. The members of the band met in high school and formed the group in 1995." More info in their biography on Wikipedia

Edward Barrow (FR)
Edward Barrow and his band often plays in small venues in Paris, but this was the first time that one of my friends N. and myself attended to one of their gigs. On that Saturday night, Edward Barrow's performance at Bellevilloise, while people were having dinner, consisted of himself playing on piano on solo and also with one musician, the multi-instrumentalist Jean-Baptiste. He's better known for drawing great short online comics strips in French under the name "Jba" about facts from his life and occasionally gigs reviews for the French music website Le Hiboo. He's also a freelance English-French translator.

A summary of the Illustrated Talk, 3rd March 2011
A new cultural place in Paris called the Gaîté Lyrique (previously known as Théâtre de la Gaîté in the 18th and 19th century) was officially reopened on March 1st 2011, then to the public on March 2nd 2011. It was closed twenty years ago due to bankruptcy, then became an amusement park. Now it’s a digital arts and modern music center with special exhibitions and concerts.
For its opening, the Gaîté Lyrique invited two close friends for an “Illustrated Talk” which started since their collaboration on the album “Fourth World, Vol.1: Possible Musics” in 1980: the multi-talented artist Brian Eno and the composer and trumpet player Jon Hassell...

Live report: 1st March 2011, CLOUD CONTROL(AUS) at Maroquinerie, Paris
I missed the opening act who was the solo French female singer Anything Maria (sorry).
The band to see that Tuesday night was the Australian band Cloud Control for their first Paris concert, as they toured Europe for the first time! I discovered the band many months ago thanks to one of the gigs organised by Black Cab Sessions in July 2010 with King Charles as support act. I mentioned them briefly here, if you missed it.

Live report: 16th February 2011, FRANK!!!(FR) + ALEXANDER KINN(FR) + THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION(NZ) + WEEKEND(US) at Flèche d'Or, Paris
A New Zealand day for me. In the afternoon I met an English teacher who comes from New Zealand. Then, at the gig, the first French band which opened the show has a female lead singer from New Zealand, and I didn't want to miss the New Zealand band The Phoenix Foundation whose performance was their first one in Paris!
As most of the Paris people went to see Alessi's Ark and Noah and The Whale at Café de la Danse or Lulu and The Lampshades at l'International, I was quite surprised to see about 100-120 persons in the audience during the performances of the two French bands, then even more for The Phoenix Foundation! Very warm inside the venue (as usual).

Live report: 7th February 2011, WILLIAM FITZSIMMONS(US) + CAROSEL(IRE) + LUCY ROSE(UK) at l'International, Paris
The most famous of the three acts that night was the first to play. William Fitzsimmons opened the show quite early. Then, the Irish duo Carosel with a percussionist, and finally Lucy Rose with her recent band for her first Paris show. Very crowded on that Monday night at l'International.
Well-written reviews are linked at the end of this post...

Live report: 23rd January 2011, HECTOR PROJECTOR(SWE) + SUMIE NAGANO(SWE) + SIOBHAN WILSON(UK) at l'International, Paris
Sorry, I was very busy last week, so here's finally the short review from that concert I waited for a while. On the lineup last Sunday at l'International: the Swedish artists Hector Projector and Sumie Nagano from Gothenburg, with Siobhan Wilson from Wales.
The venue was "unusually" very crowded for a Sunday night, around 70 persons in the audience, I think. It's obvious that most of them went to see Siobhan, but I was very glad to know that there were some people who came to listen to Hector and Sumie. I saw both of them at Pop In, 7 months ago, and it was a great pleasure to see them again. One more time, acoustic performances don't really have their place at the noisy International, where people come to drink and chat. But it depends on the gigs.
